Il movimento della Resistenza – inquadrabile storicamente nel più ampio fenomeno europeo della resistenza all'occupazione nazifascista – fu caratterizzato in Italia dall'impegno unitario di molteplici e talora opposti orientamenti politici (comunisti, azionisti, monarchici, socialisti, cattolici, liberali, repubblicani, anarchici), in maggioranza riuniti nel Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale (CLN), i cui partiti componenti avrebbero più tardi costituito insieme i primi governi del dopoguerra[5].

La Resistenza costituisce il fenomeno storico nel quale vanno individuate le origini stesse della Repubblica Italiana: l'Assemblea Costituente fu in massima parte composta da esponenti dei partiti che avevano dato vita al CLN, i quali scrissero la Costituzione fondandola sulla sintesi tra le rispettive tradizioni politiche ed ispirandola ai princìpi della democrazia e dell'antifascismo.

Il periodo storico in cui il movimento fu attivo, comunemente indicato come "Resistenza", inizia dopo l'armistizio dell'8 settembre 1943 (il CLN fu fondato a Roma il 9 settembre) e termina nei primi giorni del maggio 1945, durando quindi venti mesi circa. La scelta di celebrare la fine di quel periodo con il 25 aprile 1945 fa riferimento alla data dell'appello diramato dal CLNAI per l'insurrezione armata della città di Milano, sede del comando partigiano dell'Alta Italia.
